Ivan Obretenov was born on April 2, 1948 in Varna, Bulgaria. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski ”. He is a member of the Union of Bulgarian Artists. His paintings were presented in collective international exhibitions in Berlin (1983), Moscow (1983), Gdansk (1986), Prague (1987), Aosta (1988), Toronto (1989, 1990, 1991), Gagliardi design gallery London (1992), Drouot Paris (1991), Widgenstein House Vienna (1997), etc. He was included in the Dutch collection "1001 Reasons to Love the Earth". Ivan has participated in European art exhibitions, presented by EVEart Gallery Budapest in Line art (1997, 1998) Ghent, Belgium, St`art 1998 Strasbourg, France, Art Jonction 1998 Nice, France. He has participated in the festival of visual arts "August in Art" (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008). Ivan was part of the plein air of UBA in Ilindentsi, Bulgaria (2012), Salon of Varna artists in the gallery "Graffiti" (2012, 2013, 2014).

Winner of the Annual Award of the DIVA Gallery in 2000; The Annual Award of the Georgi Velchev Art Museum 2007; Winner of the Varna Award in the field of visual arts 2009. Ivan Obretenov is the author of the poetry books "Angels at the bus stop" (2011) and "Saved visions" -(2015). He lives and works in Varna.
